Healthcare staffing has frequently attracted scrutiny surrounding per diem/stipend tax compliance and in recent years, wage and overtime policies. Even though these seem like separate battles, they are closely related.  

Policies for tax home certification, break in service rules, distance requirements, per diem claw backs, multistate payroll and others all need attention, and they should be understood by recruiters and staff that interact with the clinicians.  

The 2010s saw many wage and income audits, and recently, several travelers have received audit notices. The IRS will typically build evidence against an employer by gathering intelligence from their employees. This was the pattern of the audits in the 2010s which included a subpoena of 400 travelers to discuss the tax policies that they encountered
