Preparing for Tax Season as Newlyweds

If you're a newlywed, congratulations! Here are some steps you can take to prepare for your first tax season together:

  1. Report any name change to the Social Security Administration

  2. Officially change your mailing address with Form 8822 and mail it to the correct address for your location (address can be found on form)

  3. Notify IRS, any employers, and the United States Postal Service of your change of address

If you and your spouse were wed as of December 31st of the tax year, you are eligible to file as married filing jointly. If you are not sure what your filing status should be, use this IRS assessment.
