Yes, but only to a point. You must compare the deductions you would claim had you stayed at the assignment area to the deductions you are claiming by going home and use the lower amount. This also applies to trips home prior to a contract extension.
Can I deduct my primary home expenses while I am away from home?
Generally no - If there is an expenses that is due to your absence, it may be deductible. Expenses like lawn care etc are deductible only if you do not otherwise pay for these services while at home.
Can I deduct mileage between my temporary worksite and my temporary home?
Yes. When you are away from home on business, you are considered to be in "travel status" and are allowed deductions for transportation to and from the worksite. If you are at home, travel to and from work is considered personal commuting expense. Trips that are not business related are not deductible even when away from home.
